Jazz, blues and cup goings on here in #jazzcountry

How's your week been? If you're like me you've spent some time over the past few days plotting your weekend. Who wouldn't, there's so much to do here in Wangaratta over the next few days.

Let's start the celebrations early and head off to the Wangaratta Art Show opening at the Uniting Church Hall on Thursday night.  Snag a masterpiece and then pop by Derailleur for a late dinner or drink.

On Friday Wangaratta will start to buzz as last-minute preparations are put in place for the town’s twenty-sixth jazz and blues festival.  The free stage area is along Faithful Street this year to take advantage of the burgeoning Ovens Riverside precinct.  There’ll be plenty of people in town so don’t leave it too late to book a table with us for dinner.

Saturday morning’s all about the Oxley Bush Markets.  Get set for 175 stalls of home-made, home-produced, home-grown and new items.  Be sure to buy a raffle ticket as there’s over thirty prizes donated by local businesses from the Milawa Gourmet and King Valley regions, ranging from accommodation vouchers to food and wine hampers.

Then it’s off to the jazz festival to see and hear the big names such as Dave Douglas, Canned Heat and Jane Bunnett, and old favourites like James Morrison, Ash Grunwald and Thirsty Merc. Keep an eye out for Lauren and me at the King George Gardens over Saturday and Sunday, we love our jazz and blues!

As you pass by Derailleur on the way to your jazz and blues events, don't forget to tinkle the ivories of our piano.

The rest of Australia might get back to the grind on Monday, but not Wang. Stop in at our café for breakfast before you head out to one of Wangaratta’s iconic wineries to wind down with music, gourmet food and wines. You can catch the festival’s courtesy bus home, after all.

Then Tuesday is Melbourne Cup day. We're open 'till 2 pm and we don't have a big screen. For many we're a place of refuge for those seeking to escape the cup. Others just come for the food.

This weekend, if you need to fit in a breakfast or two, a late lunch around that show you have to see or a snack on the way home 'coz you missed dinner, think of Derailleur - we're open for the whole weekend.

We'd love to hear about your jazz and blues exploits, drop by during these hours...

  • Friday and Saturday 7 am-11 pm
  • Sunday 8 am to 3 pm
  • Monday 7 am to 4 pm
  • Tuesday 7 am to 2 pm (come for breaky before 9 am and sample our eggs benedict and a glass of Dal Zotto Prosecco for $25 (includes surcharge)

Remember - if you're meeting a few people here you can book ahead by calling 03 5722 9589 to ensure a table's set aside for you.

So, what are your weekend plans? There's so much on - what other local events should we go to?
